Temporary public policy for nationals of Iran in Canada as temporary residents
The Canadian government has announced a temporary public policy that will allow eligible Iranian nationals currently in Canada as temporary residents to apply for extensions of their temporary resident status, open work permits, and study permits at no cost. The policy also facilitates travel for Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in Iran by providing limited-validity Canadian passports, Canadian citizenship certificates, and permanent resident travel documents, all at no cost.
These measures will remain in effect until February 28, 2024. Eligible applications submitted in Canada will be processed on a priority basis. The policy aims to make it easier for Iranians currently in Canada to extend their stay without fees and move between temporary resident streams.
This policy has been established in response to the tragic killing of Mahsa Amini by the Iranian regime's "morality police," and is part of Canada's efforts to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its repression of peaceful protests. The government of Canada has expressed its unequivocal support for the brave women, students, and people of Iran.
To be eligible for this public policy, applicants must be nationals of Iran in Canada with valid temporary resident status. They must have applied for an extension of their authorization to remain in Canada as a temporary resident under section 181 of the Regulations, or a temporary resident permit. Additionally, they must have applied for a work permit under section 200 or 201 of the Regulations, or a study permit under section 216 or 217 of the Regulations from within Canada.
Foreign nationals eligible under this public policy are subject to all other legislative obligations and admissibility and selection requirements not exempted under this, or another, public policy.
This public policy comes into effect upon signature and applies to applications received on or after the date it comes into effect.
It expires on February 28, 2024, and may be revoked at any time without prior notice.
